Midsummer is the day of the sun. On this day the sun is the highest in the sky. This occurence is celebrated in many cultures dating back hundreds or even thousands of years. During my research on the summer solstice I read a lot about a greeting ritual. in pagan cultures the sun is seen as a strong hunter during summer, he's at his strongest in his life, just like the sun. To celebrate his strenght bonfires are lit to represent the fire and heat of the sun. On the night before the solstice people stay up all night to greet the sun in the morning. Inspired by this ritual I made my own. In this photo series I greet the sun in my own way, by waving.
But after this day all the days until midwinter will become shorter and the darkness will win. With this in mind I made the video ‘Dark'.
